The essential premise of the Fallout series is that the escalation of the Cold War led to a desperate fight over resources, an event which the first Fallout’s introduction poignantly describes: “This time, the spoils of war were also its weapons: petroleum, and uranium.” For these resources, the United States annexed Canada, imposing martial law, and Chinese forces launched an invasion of Anchorage, Alaska. More than that, it created for me one of the most incredibly somber and contemplative experiences in gaming. Nevermind that this game had about six voice actors for literally dozens of in-game characters, that Saturday morning cartoon villains wouldn’t contemplate the evil choices you could make in this game, or that very little of the background workings of the world it creates make any sense! This is a game where you follow your character from birth, through their entire life, and into the momentous events they’re bound to get into. A long time ago, this was one of the only games for which I was willing to shell out the required $50 for a new copy, and I played it a lot. During my weekend, I found myself re-exploring this game after a long time of having forgotten about it. Anyone who knows anything about gaming in the last five years or so will probably remember Fallout 3, and will definitely remember its developers: Bethesda Softworks.
